HI ALL!

As we all know, term 3 is the busiest term of the year. Term 3 is flooded with many events such as Youth Day Funfair, NYCO concert, Term 3 block test, Chinese Dance concert, Concert Band concert, National Day.... etc. Despite the hectic schedule ahead of us, it's important that we take good care of ourselves! It's inevitable that our slacking time will be shorten, but we still need to plan our time well such that we strike a good balance between work and rest!

For us, i guess the most significant event is our very own concert. As the date draws closer, the stress and burden intensify. Dont worry too much, just do our best; leave no stones unturned, dont regret. I have faith that we will rock SCH. In this crucial period, it is vital that we take extra care of ourselves and our instruments. Do show care and concern for one another, including our beloved conductors okay! At the same time, we also cannot let loose. We still gotta buck up and add lots of oil to achieve our goal! We will do well and make this the best ever NYCO concert! :D

Alright, enough of nagging! I'd like to promote a performance! Our very own pipa section will be performing 龙船 in the mini concert during funfair. So don't forget to support them as we have fun in funfair!

Jiayou chewfei for hair for hope, jiayou pipa for funfair performance and last but not least, JIAYOU NYCO! :D

The President Full of Love (hahahah!),
Sheila

hello NYCO!!

Not sure if everyone knows, but our dear shuai ge Chew Fei is participating in Hair For Hope '08 next Sunday!

koped from the website:

Objectives

Hair for Hope is an event, which invites members of the public to shave their heads to show their support for children with cancer. Through this symbolic gesture, we aim to:

  • Create awareness of childhood cancer in Singapore.
  • Tell every child with cancer and their families that they are not alone in the fight against cancer and that there is nothing wrong about losing hair or being bald
  • Raise funds to help children with cancer and their families
  • Build a community of support for children with cancer

Why Shave Heads?

Patients’ hair loss, from treatments of cancer such as chemotherapy, is a representation of his or her courageous fight against cancer. Through the symbolic gesture of shaving our heads, we hope to lend moral support to all children with cancer, and to let them know that there is nothing wrong with being bald.

--------------

the reason why supporters are encouraged is because while we are not shaving your heads, the least we can do is go and support those who are! and chewfei being the only female and the youngest among the participants, i think it takes a lot of courage to decide to shave your own head bald so CO LET'S GO SUPPORT CHEWFEI!!!! (:

if you wanna go...

Date: 6 July 2008 (next Sunday!)
Timing: Chewfei's time slot is at 12.3opm
Venue: Velocity@Novena Square

for more details, you can just approach anyone from YQP!

k thats all! hope you guys would go and support!!!

hello! i shall add on to the youtube video posts! this piece is 葡萄熟了, it's one of my favourite pieces :D i think the most amusing part is the bass, it's really red! and the scores are really big, maybe because they're quite old and have 老花眼 :P

and to my xyz: please don't move forward and backward like the lady in the video, it's weird!

NYCO!!

Saturday, June 21, 2008

HEYYO! I've just watched a very nice video! HAHA! It's a video of 黄河愤. For those who don't know what song it is, it's actually a piano concerto. NYCO played this before in the previous concert.

This version is played by 中央樂團 in the 1970s. HAHA! After watching the video, i was super impressed by the pianist. Before i post my comments, pls watch the video first! hehh! Do take note of the pianist's taifeng!

Haha! How's it? The pianist is really pro right! Though i admit that both his and the conductor's taifeng are quite funny because of their 'movable fringes', i can't deny that the piano solo was full of emotions. At gentle parts, the music was really gentle and smooth; at furious parts, he's got the oomph!

Now, imagine him playing the piano solo with all those dynamics but without taifeng.
1. The image will be contradicting cos he's like a blockhead while the music is so full of ups and downs.
2. The extreme moods may not be carried out that well because his taifeng doesnt help him to project his strength/mood.

Lol! I think this is a super random post lah, but this is just smth to share with u guys! Perhaps we should all gel our fringes up during co prac from now on. We should start practising taifeng by attempting to make our fringes move! HAHAHA!

Anyway, it seems like we're still far from our goal. We've less than a month to concert. Yes, the dateline looks intimidating, that's why from now on, we really have to make practices very effective. I don't know if this will work, but let's give it a try ok! During pracs, we shall stop chit chatting with our frens. Let's try to FEEL THE MUSIC! (i know it sounds funny, but i guess that's the best way i can phrase it) We shall try to INDULGE OURSELVES INTO THE MUSIC and play with our genuine feelings! (rmb, our goal is to make our audience feel moved!) Of course, before we can improve on our music, we have to clear our technical barriers first. Although i've mentioned in term 2 that we should clear our technical problems and intonation before hols, i doubt we've achieved that. I can understand that it's tough, but let's all jiayou together ok!

Seriously, based on the reportoires of our concert, it's apparent that the songs are rather appealing. Furthermore, we have a good reputation of achieving the gold with honours award for SYF last year. Hence, i believe that our concert sales will be quite good. Your CAPABLE COMMITTEE (see the alliteration) is also working very hard on concert preparation. So now what's left is our effort. Imagine a concert hall filled with audience, imagine the deafening applause after every pieces, imagine the concert running through very smoothly, one piece after another, feel the sense of achievement when the audience are touched by our music... It'll be the best ever NYCO concert! In these last 27 days, let's us all JIAYOU and make this coming concert THE BEST EVER NYCO CONCERT! WOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO!

Trust me, all the efforts will be worthwhile! (:

The Shortest President in History,
Sheila

____________________________________________________________________

okay, serious matters.

Today we had our first round of elections, which is filling in nomination forms. Before I go on, I'd like to reiterate that we will interview every single nominee, even if she only has one vote. Normally when someone is being nominated, this shows that people trust her ability. Thus, the nomination forms are just a gauge for us to see who're the people who has the ability. We are not goint to choose the committee based on the number of votes. Firstly, we will interview those nominees then we decide on the final committee. So the final decision lies on your Sec 4 seniors and of course, Mrs Ee. I'd also like to clarify this once again--- it is not a trend that understudy (for all posts e.g. ASL, secretary, scores i/c, VP etc.) will definitely promote to the official post. Lastly, age does not really matter in all posts except for VP 1 and President. In other words, the SL can also be someone who is younger.

We have collated the nomination results. The following is the interview details and the order of appearance.

Interview
Dates: 12/06/08, Thursday and 17/06/08, Tuesday

The interview goes like this:
The first three people will go to the music lab. The first nominee will be interviewed first, while the second and third nominees wait outside. Once the first nominee is done, she will call for the fourth nominee and the second nominee will enter the room for interview.

As you can see, there are many people to be interviewed. So please try to remember who are before and after you and don't break the chain. Those nominees who are interviewed are also not allowed to discuss any interview-related topics with those waiting outside.

All nominees have to go through at least one round of interview. Those who're absent on their scheduled day of interview will have their interviews postponed to school reopens.

Yup, that's about it. Jiayou nominees! :D

retorting against sheila's post on the 5th of june-

taha. just decided to join in the fun [:
although it cant really be called fun; it's quite weird actually.

but sheila! shirota yuu looks better, haha.
okay never mind, it's just opinion =.=

//

anyway, 38 MORE DAYS!

i think now i'm starting to feel the 'drama', or rather excitement and tension leading up to 18th july. nowadays whenever there's no cca, i start feeling jittery o____O

it's weird, but it's happening; i'm probably not making any sense. i just hope this concert will truly be a fabulous one, and i'm sure many of you want it to be also! to be honest, the sense of accomplishment when you reflect on all the hard work will be indescribable. neither will the happiness and pride be expressed in words easily. all the way, for your own sake, because you're of bigger importance to nyco than you think you are (:

even if you would NOT like this concert to be a fantastic one (which is rather.. weird), then do it for your sec 4 seniors, who will have the 18th july concert as they're final performance, together with us, as nyco..

it's a sad thing; a very sad thing.

but it's inevitable. and since it is, the most we can do, and would like to do, is to send them off with beautiful memories that may fade, but will never disappear, nor lose its value.

only a few words left to this post:

JIAYOU, NYCO!

NYCO!!

Saturday, June 07, 2008

Hi dearest NYCO!

Time flies! It’s June already! In other words, the annual NYCO Committee Elections is coming very soon. In the past, elections were mainly just interviewing all Sec 2-3 NYCO members. Since it is very time-consuming and it may greatly affect our tight practice schedule, the Sec 4s have decided to modify the format of the elections, such that it will be effective and less prolonged.

Before everything begins, all members will be told to read this blog post on the election. This post will include contents such as the election procedures, positions available and their respective duties. Please read carefully and treat this seriously. Thank you and enjoy the rest of the super long post. (:

This time, we will be issuing nomination forms for members to fill in names of their recommended nominees. To prevent unnecessary influence in the choices, we will make all members sit away from the others (isolated, as if you’re sitting for a test), fill in the form and slot it into boxes prepared for each section. Nomination forms should be kept anonymous and confidential. (So if you are interested and are shy, you can now feel free to nominate yourself!) Only Sec 2 and 3 members are applicable for the nomination. The issuing of nomination forms will be held on 10 Jun, Tuesday, 8.30am at M401. All Sec 2-4 members are required to report to M401 by 8.30am. Sec 4s are to stay back after CCA practice on that day, to collate the results and plan the order of appearance for interview.

After collating the results, the Sec 4s will call upon all mentioned nominees (even if that person has very few votes) for interview. The order of interviews will be announced on Thursday morning, before practice begins. All interviews should be held on Thursday, unless we run out of time, then it may have to be spilled over to another. Should this happens, we will inform those nominees who have not been interviewed about the rescheduled timeslots.

Once the interviews have come to an end, the Sec 4s will go through rounds of discussion to decide the new committee. However, the final results will be decided by Mrs Ee. The results will only be announced after term 3 block tests. (:

To let you guys start considering your preferred nominees, I’ll be showing you the positions available and their job scopes.

EXCO:
1 President (Sec 3)

The president is the overall in charge of the orchestra. Regardless of admin, welfare or logistics, she has to take consideration into all aspects of the CO. She’s also a BEL (Board of Elected CCA Leaders) member. Many of you may be wondering if president will be super busy and stressful, as a president, I think time management is very vital for a president. If you can manage time well, you can still have time to watch videos on youtube and stuff. HAHA! Then again, you have to be very committed as there’ll be many stuff that you have to deal with. So most importantly, the president must like NYCO or she’ll have a hard time. As a representative of the CO, she also needs to be vocal when addressing problems whether with the CO or to the school. Being a CO president is quite challenging too, because CO is the largest CCA group in NYGH. But it’s really a good experience as you’ll gain leadership skills beyond what you can imagine! HAHA!

2 VPs (1 from Sec 3 and 1 from Sec 2)

Needless to say, VPs are there to help the president, so their job scopes are pretty similar to the president’s. To me, whether it’s president or vice-president, they’re actually on par, not like ‘vice’ means she’s under the official president. We name them as vice-presidents because there can only be 1 president, 1 main representative of the CO. In other words, VPs are equally as important as the president. VPs have to be proactive especially in helping the president, because their suggestions are the best gauge for the pres. In this case, it is important that the president and the VP can work well together. The Sec 2 VP is ‘president understudy’. She’s part of the president committee so that she’s exposed to the usual planning that a president has to deal with.

1 Treasurer

I believe all of you are aware of what the treasurer deals with --- $$$MONEY!$$$ lol. Other than collecting CO fund from members, the treasurer is also in charge of concert ticket sales. For instance when there is an upcoming concert, she will have to collect the money and distribute the tickets to the people who ordered tics. The challenging part of this post is that she has to deal with large sums of money, because CO is a super big group of CCA. (: (must learn from Ester because she’s been very efficient in dealing with funds! Hehh!)

2 Secretaries (1 from Sec 3 and 1 from Sec 2)

Secretaries deal with tedious jobs, such as taking minutes and taking attendance. Sounds easy, but not that case when you’re dealing with a HUGE group of people! HAHA! For minutes, you must be fast and precise when taking notes down. Even taking attendance, they have to be fast or it will take up a lot of time during practice. I can say that they’re the most meticulous people as they have to keep track of everybody’s attendance, making sure that absentees submit their excuse letters or MC. With the new birthday system, the secretary has to also inform the president the name of the birthday girls of that particular month.

2 Scores in-charge (1 from Sec 3 and 1 from Sec 2)

Scores in-charge is another tedious job. They have to make sure the zong3 pu3 is updated after Mrs Ee rectifies a mistake in the scores. They also ensure that all of us receive the necessary scores. The most tedious part is when the scores are all in ‘bean sprout’ form (haha! Western scores I mean). They’ll have to get people to help transpose the scores into the ‘number’ form. For those who wonder how you get your scores from, some of them were completely copied by your peers (e.g. taiyang, shanjian etc). So be grateful and don’t misplace your scores easily!

2 Student conductors

Student conductors are usually pre-selected by Mrs Ee. As a student conductor, she gets to conduct in mini-events such as open house. She also helps to conduct dazus when Mrs Ee is unable to make it. Of course, don’t think that conducting is all about waving a stick in the air. These people will undergo training from Mrs Ee before becoming a student conductor. It is a challenge for amateurs, so please give your fullest support to your student conductor in the future! (:

1 Manager of General Affairs (MGA)

This time, we will only have 1 MGA. The MGA is in charge of the welfare and logistics of the CO. In other words, they take care of your instruments, stands, cleanliness and welfare. Looks taxing, but don't worry. The MGA is not going to do all these all by herself. As an overall in-charge of the above following, she assign tasks to the people in the orchestra, such that all of us accomplish them together. She also ensures that everybody has a good instrument to use, costume to wear and is in charge of instrument loans from other schools. MGA is a job that requires passion. If you have the passion to take care of the welfare of NYCO, run for MGA post! :D
SLs:
- Xianyue: 1 SL, 1 ASL
- Yangqin: 1 SL
- Percussion: 1 SL
- Pipa: 1 SL
- Liuqin: 1 SL
- Ruan: 1 SL
- Dizi: 1 SL
- Sheng: 1 SL
- Suona: 1 SL
- Cellobass: 1 SL

Often, the SL post is being seen as an insignificant role in the committee. Truthfully, I’d say,’ NO! SLs are important roles of a CO!’ A successful orchestra needs inputs of all members. And SLs are the people who ensure that every single one of us is able to play well. SLs don’t just collect and inform stuff to the section or lead practices when the instructors can’t make it. Like mentioned, they are there to make sure all of you can play well before you are being ‘tortured in Mrs Ee’s hands when you’re not strong enough to withstand her powers’! HAHAHA! So drama! Besides, they are in charge of the section’s rapport and welfare. Remember, without your SL, your section will ‘lose direction’ and the CO will be affected. In other words, the word ‘SL’ ties very closely with the growth of the section. Many have the misconception that SLs must be technically the proest in the section. No, once again. Most importantly, the SL must be able to LEAD the section to greater heights (not just music, but also the rapport).

Points to note:
- Yangqin/Percussion section will be split into two different sections from the next batch onwards.
- Don’t be misled that all the current Sec 3 understudy positions in committee will definitely be promoted to become the official post. So please do not vote according to understudies. Vote based on who you think has the potential in the position.

This is a very PRESTIGIOUS event of NYCO. The future of NYCO lies in your decision. So, we sincerely urge you to nominate wisely. Thank you! :D
